Beautiful island trip

Beautiful islands. I think it would well to break down the schedule a little to know what to expect and how long we are at each place. Long day but worth it.
An experience well worth the trip

This was really two separate adventures. The first was the trip there. The last 90 minutes as a real off-roading adventure as very little remains of the original road through the San Blas hills. As you approach the top of each hill be on the lookout for spectacular jungle views in breaks in the foliage by the road. There are a number of 4 x 4's on the road with no more than 6 people heading to the same place. The drivers must be very skilled and a bit crazy to do this every day.

The second adventure was the actual visit to the islands which are absolutely beautiful. The fact they are so hard to get to keeps them that way. Once you get to the end of the 4 x 4 offroading trip, you will be organized into groups of about 12-14 to board a boat for the actual trip to the islands. Each boat will have its own guide who will take your lunch order and help you out at each island. These boats are operated by the indiginous people in the area and you will see their flags on the back of each boat. The flag with the backwards swastika is for the local Kuna tribe.

The San Blas are small tropical islands, the kind you can image being shipwrecked on. They had beautiful beaches but with bathrooms and in most cases places to get adult beverages. The ones we stopped at were pretty well protected by larger waves by a reef or sandbar about half a mile out so the water at the beach was calm and crystal clear. On the way to one of the islands we anchored at a sandbar where we could jump out and swim. It was really a cool experience.

We had lunch on Island #2. It was pretty good and they offerend a number of options, some better than others and there was an option to upgrade your meal to lobster though you need to do that before you get on the boat. The last island we visited seemed to be the favorite of many in the group and we ended up staying longer than usual so we never made it to island #4. I actually liked the 1st island best as well as the swimming on the sandbar. Each island does have its own character and different ammenities, but this trip was the highlight of our trip to Panama. It is a long day, but well worth it. If you get car-sick easily it might not be for you, however. Just don't look at your phone during the off-road portion of the trip and you will probably be fine.

Also because the land portion of this trip is pretty independant from the island visit, you should tip the driver separately from the guide. One knows nothing about the other. How you split it up is up to you of course.

Beautiful adventures

The entire experience/adventure was one I’ll never forget…from bumpy crude through the jungle to the port to the boat crossing to the San Blas Islands - it was amazing! While not for the faint at heart or non-adventurous it is definitely worth the experience.
It was great. I got very dizzy. The road to get to the pier us a disaster!!! And very damgerous

The islands are amazing.
But too much travel to stay just a couples of hours!!!
The catamarans are not confortable enough
People very friendly.
Long day to San Blas - mixed impression

This really was one LONG day out. Traveled with my wife and 11-yr old son. We understood going in that the ride to/from San Blas would be a little rough and long, but reality set in a few minutes into the pothole craters of a road across the Panama interior. The islands were beautiful with super clear waters, but honestly can't recommend as a day trip from Panama City. About 14 hours all said and done, with the early wakeup call. 8 of those hours were 'commuting'. The time spent on the beach just wasn't enough to offset this.

Lunch was ok, not great. The three of us each tried a different dish, mediocre across the board. But you don't go to San Blas for the meal, so that didn't really deter us.

Just as an FYI, while our driver was amazing at navigating the massive potholes, he spoke very little English, all our communication was in Spanish. Our guide at the islands was not very clear to understand (in either English or Spanish) due to the engine roar of the boat and being soft-spoken. We would have appreciated more insight into the history and culture of the locals.
